Serbis (2008) has some of the nastiest shit I’ve seen since I watched Salo. Homeboy really is shin-high in shitwater and scooping it out by the bucket. That putrid boil on dude’s ass gets an extra close-up. And though many others have tried, you can’t fake fellatio. The rundown, putrid movie theater that the entire film is set in is appalling, even by Third World standards. Lacking a budget to stylize or fake any of this (Hello, Slumdog) Brillante Mendoza’s outdoes his previous underbelly excursions (Tirador, Foster Child) with his best outing.
The Pineda family, once successful, now wracked by relationship and financial drama, struggles mightly to keep the ironically-named Family Theater open. Family members all work and live at the theater, which services a mostly gay male clientele who do all types of things in the dark. From morning to midnight, scenes juggle from one family member to another on this day, like any day, but distinct for the fact that the family’s feudal matriarch finds out today if she successfully wins a civil court case against her ex-husband. The immersive, jarring camerawork gives us long, uninterrupted shots through dirty hallways, stairs, makeshift bedrooms, and the screening room, the projecting room. Between interesting, bustling behind-the-scenes scenes of running the business, lots of sex and troubleshooting goes down. At one point, a wayward goat interrupts a screening and a gang of them give chase.
Sound gross and absurd? It is. And some of the narrative hiccups are plain sloppy. Like when homegirl scratches out an old boyfriend’s name on the wall and walks past it later, unscratched. Storylines and characters that are introduced and never revisited. But as you’d expect from Mendoza, what it lacks in polish it more than makes up with its honesty and shrewdly layered commentary: on gender and sexuality (these aren’t your typical flaming comic-relief gay Filipinos), feudal family relations, capitalism, media, etc. Perhaps most of all, amidst the rotting posters of past Pinoy films and the crumbling marquee, is a blunt reaction to the state of Philippine cinema, even cinema itself. It’s been done many times before, but rarely coming from a Filipino’s camera, and even rarer this graphically. |
พบกันอีกรอบกับความเสียวแบบเต็มอิ่ม ของพระเอกดังจากเรื่อง Pleasure factory
Inspired by true events, Solos explores the relationship between three individuals as they struggle to open up their feelings towards each other. Man (Lim Yu-Beng) and Boy (Loo Zihan) have been in an illicit relationship for years. Growing out of his teenage years, Boy is restless, and starts seeking new sexual adventures. Meanwhile, Boy’s mother (Goh Guat Kian) blames herself for everything Boy has turned out to be and wishes her son to return home to her. Each scene in Solos is at once highly stylized and painfully realistic. The film has no dialogue, but relies on strong visual imagery and sound-design to convey the story. Solos is the second feature of co-director Kan Lume, and first feature of co-director Loo Zihan, who also wrote the screenplay and plays the part of Boy. Actors Lim Yu- Beng and Goh Guat Kian, and sound artist Darren Ng are prominent theatre artists in Singapore.
The film has no dialogue to give freedom to the audience individual interpretation of the film.
Principal photography was shot with a PANASONIC AG-HVX202 camera and edited on Grass Valley EDIUS HD from Thomson.
The film is produced by Florence Ang of Red Dawn Productions and Gerald Herman of Discovery Communications with Ricardo Uncilla as Executive Producer and Kan Lume as Co-Producer.
The film was shot entirely in Singapore and principal photography took one month to complete.
Solos had its World-Premiere in the 12th Pusan International Film Festival in Busan, South.Korea. Since then, it has screened at film festivals around the world including AFI Fest in Los Angeles, Sydney Mardi Gras Film Festival, London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival.
Director: Ashu Trikha
Music: Sen Brothers Cast: Neha Dhupia, Sonu Sood, Vivek Shaque and Eildith Macqueen After Neha Dhupia's much talked about role as a high-class prostitute in the film Julie, the lass is back. And this time, it is a story of love, passion, desire and obsession, with eroticism in it's best.
Please keep in mind that Sheesha might just remind you of Sharmilee (Rakhee and Shashi Kapoor) and Darr starring Juhi Chawla, Shahrukh Khan and Sunny Deol.
Sheesha tells the story of Sia (Neha Dhupia) and her soul mate, Raj (Sonu Sood). Raj is a handsome young technical director (media) of Channel 7, the most popular satellite channel operating in Thailand. Sia is a budding fashion designer whose designer outfit 'Shades' is on the threshold of going international.
![]() It is by destiny that Sia and Raj come together. Both fall head over heels in love with each other. Raj helps Sia attain great professional heights and international recognition.
All goes well until something incredible happens. Sia has a twin sister named Ria who of course is a 'carbon copy' of Sia. (And that is Neha Dhupia in a dual role for you). Ria, who is deaf and mute, has a strong liking towards Raj that slowly leads into obsession. Raj, who mistakes Ria for Sia becomes intimate with her.
Sia has to leave for an international assignment and leaves Ria in Raj's care. Ria's immense love for Raj makes her eccentric. She even murders Diane (Elidith Macqueen) after she saw her kissing and hugging Raj. Slowly, Raj starts realizing that Ria is not what she seems and that mirrors can lie too.
Sia returns after a few days and there is confrontation between the two sisters. What will happen? In the ensuing tug of war, is it love that wins or is it lust? Watch it out...
The theme of love and obsession is not new in Bollywood cinema and hence the film has nothing novel to offer. Secondly, though the first half is very gripping, the climax in the second half is too predictable.
Ashu Trikha does deserve applause for having handled some of the scenes extremely well. He has made sure that the intimate scenes involving Neha and Sonu are shot aesthetically and don't look vulgar. Given the right theme, Ashu would certainly rise to the occasion.
As for Neha Dhupia, if you think her perfomance in Julie was hot, you need to watch Sheesha. The generous show of skin does manage to hold your attention. But luckily for Neha, none of the scenes look sleazy. She is certainly very expressive and Sheesha is her best perfomance till date. Sonu Sood has made an average debut and lacks the screen presence. Vivek Shaque has given a commendable perfomance too.
![]() Music by Sen Brothers is catchy, especially the songs 'Yaar Ko Maine' and 'Mujhe Jeena Sikha Do Na', which are very well filmed songs. Choreography by Pony Verma and cinematography by Raju Kaygee is authentic.
However in the long run, Sheesha might not be able to stand the test of time. A very average film with an above-average potential.
